Watershed was founded with the goal of reducing global greenhouse gas emissions by 500 megatonnes–or 1% of global annual emissions–every year, through the actions of our customers.
Today we’re announcing an important milestone on the journey to that goal: Watershed now manages an estimated 1 gigaton of CO2e emissions.
To put that into perspective, the aggregated carbon footprints of our customers now surpass 1 billion metric tonnes of CO2e, or:
- The annual emissions of Japan, the world’s 4th largest economy.
- The annual emissions produced by driving all passenger cars in the United States.
We believe that what is measured can be managed, and what is managed can be reduced. The greater our emissions under management, the greater the opportunity for reduction.
Our customers now include the world’s largest retailers, 4 of the 6 biggest banks in the United States, legacy manufacturing and media brands, a global airline conglomerate, and dozens of companies in the Fortune 500.
Core to Watershed’s mission is the conviction that collective climate action unlocks exponential results. Our customers learn from each other about topics ranging from sustainability disclosure to internal stakeholder education and tactical ways to reduce their footprints. They also have access to clean power and carbon removal projects that, collectively funded, yield impact higher than projects taken on individually.
As Watershed grows and is used by customers across every type of industry and geography, our potential for impact grows too. With the vision and commitment of the companies we partner with globally, together we can accelerate the climate economy.
