Watershed customers Aledade, Canva, SKIMS, Skyscanner, Wise, and Zendesk are participating in $58.3M in carbon removal offtake agreements from Vaulted Deep, a waste biomass supplier, via Watershed’s partnership with Frontier.

Vaulted will remove 152,480 tonnes of CO₂ by 2027 on behalf of Frontier buyers, with 18,321 tonnes expected to be delivered in 2024. Vaulted’s approach offers 10,000+ year permanence, near-term scalability, and local co-benefits.

Vaulted removes emitted carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by injecting carbon-rich organic waste deep underground for permanent storage. Their approach starts with plants that naturally absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere via photosynthesis. Much of that plant life ends up as carbon-rich waste in the form of biosolids, manure, food, or agricultural waste that is incinerated, landfilled, or spread on land. As that waste burns or decomposes, the once-captured CO₂ is released back into the atmosphere. Vaulted prevents that from happening by turning that waste into a carbon-rich slurry and then injecting it into deep disposal wells for permanent geologic storage.

In addition to removing carbon, Vaulted offers a safe way to dispose of waste like biosolids, manure, food and agricultural waste, and papermill sludge. The typical disposal methods for this waste can create a number of problems for nearby communities, including soil, water, and air pollution; Vaulted’s solution has the potential to reduce environmental and human health harms in surrounding communities.
