Paul Mertenskötter is an associate at Covington and Burling LLP. He advises companies, investors, and governments on regulatory environmental, social, and governance (ESG), international trade, and public policy matters. He has particular experience advising clients on the European Union’s Green Deal, including the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), EU Forced Labor Products Ban, and Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

Matt is Head of Policy at Watershed. Matt joined Watershed from Monzo, where he was Head of Policy and ESG. Before Monzo, Matt spent a decade in the UK civil service, holding various roles in the Financial Services Directorate at HM Treasury, as a political negotiator for the UK in the European Council, and in the Department for Exiting the European Union, working on financial services policy and as private secretary to two secretaries of state.
